AbstractOn May 1st, 2004, 10 new member states were integrated into the European Union, increasing the EU-population by 75 million to 382 million people. This historical step was accompanied by both hopes and fears regarding the possible consequences of integration. The main concern for Germany is its direct neighbour Poland with its huge population of 38 million. The expectation is that there will be a vast inflow of labour migrants, putting pressure on what is already a difficult labour market situation.
This paper deals with the possible changes of East-West-Migration after the EU-Enlargement. Migra-tion theories from social sciences and economics are presented as a basis for the study of migration flows. This is followed by a consideration of migration prognoses from the nineties which predicted the present situation. Against this background, the migration processes between Poland and Germany will be described both in their total numbers and in their different forms, with the purpose of drawing con-clusions for future migration movements.
