AbstractThe integration of Poland in the European Union will enable Polish citizens to choose their place of work and residence in any other member state of the EU. But already now there are significant numbers of Polish citizens working in countries of the EU, especially in Germany. Most of them, however, only plan a temporary stay in Germany and keep their residence in Poland.
This paper wants to shed light on the flows of temporary labour migration between Poland and Germany. First, the theory of transnational migration is presented as a basis for analyzing the phenomenon of temporary migration. Against this background, the migration processes between Poland and Germany will be described both in their total numbers and in their different forms. The example of Polish seasonal work in the German agricultural sector is then used to analyze transnational aspects of temporary migration. The final conclusion shows the consequences of temporary migration for the workers, for the employers as well as for the government and questions the durability of temporary migration processes.
